Joining us in the studio for this Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is a group whose new songs are the kind you could only write after devoting a significant chunk of your life to playing music. Domenic “Nicky” Palermo has been leading the Philly band NOTHING for over a decade and a half, and in that time the group has evolved from scrappy noise-punk to muscular shoegaze. Though not exactly a hardcore band, NOTHING’s hammering rhythms and stacked guitars give their material a caustic energy. That menace is counter-balanced on their new album, a short history of decay, by reflective, wizened lyrics.

Just days after the album’s release, Palermo and his bandmates – dueling guitarists Doyle Martin and Cam Smith, drummer Zachary Jones, and Best Coast bassist Bobb Bruno – visited our studio to perform a set of the new songs. They also revisited a fan favorite from their 2014 debut, Guilty of Everything, transforming the early cut into a multi-part triumph.

XPN welcomes NOTHING to Union Transfer this Saturday, April 4th.
