Hometown: Chattanooga, Tennessee by way of Monrovia, Liberia

Why They’re WXPN Artist To Watch: It doesn’t take long to understand why Mon Rovîa is quickly becoming a vital voice in modern folk. His debut album, Bloodline, arrived in early January, and its tracks have already racked up up more than 31 million listens.

Mon Rovîa’s sound feels like a natural extension of the current indie folk revival, sharing a certain DNA with acts like Jesse Welles, Noah Kahan, and Hozier. Tracks like “Whose Face Am I” showcase this beautifully, featuring introspective verses that lead into swelling choruses with a lilting melody. “Heavy Foot” leans into the poppier side while maintaining its roots in protest music, with Mon Rovîa couching the lyrics “And the government / Staying on heavy foot/ And they tried to keep us all down” in a catchy, head-bobbing rhythm.

You Might Know Them From: Mon Rovîa, real name Janjay Lowe, was named one of Spotify’s Juniper Artists to Watch and has performed at iconic events and venues such as Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, and the Grand Ole Opry. The singer-songwriter was also the first musical guest on “The Mel Robbins Podcast,” where he also discussed art, activism, and resilience.

Fun Fact: Lowe is the son of adoptive parents and lived in Florida, Montana, and the Bahamas before settling in Tennessee with his family, where he began exploring ukulele, guitar, and more instruments.

Essential Tracks: “Heavy Foot,” “Bloodline,” and “crooked the road.”

Catch Them Live: After Bloodline‘s in January release, Mon Rovîa has an extensive slate of live dates. Unfortunately, none are in Philadelphia. His closest tour date it July 25 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.
