WXPN - Gospel Roots of Rock And Soul
Gospel Roots of Rock And Soul
WXPN’s Gospel Roots of Rock and Soul Signature Series explores the influence of African American gospel on early rock, R&B, and soul music.
Without gospel music there never would have been an Elvis Presley. There never would have been a Ray Charles, or a James Brown. From the mid-twentieth century on, gospel music not only thrived within a separate sphere as vital as the jazz, rock and rhythm and blues worlds; it also constantly intersected with the secular music industry, providing models that countless artists outside the church emulated.
The series includes a three hour radio documentary and podcast hosted by Grammy Award winning Gospel singer Cece Winans. The product of 16 months of interviews with over 50 musicians and gospel historians and includes live performance recordings of live gospel concerts with The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Fairfield Four, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Fisk Jubilee Singers, and more.
