WXPN Video Roundup
WXPN Video Roundup
It’s week two of our Video Roundup series at WXPN, and here’s what you missed go live this week.
Perhaps you have a short memory and can’t recall the miserable downpour of Tropical Storm Ophelia we endured during last year’s XPNFest. I’ll set the scene: hundreds of brave music fans huddled under their parkas and umbrellas, determined not to miss the joy of experiencing their favorite XPN artists live. This Low Cut Connie set was a particular high-point of the wet weekend; the rain slowed to a drizzle, and the late-evening energy was high. And it’s this song, the dramatic “Are You Gonna Run” recorded live at XPoNential, that opens Homegrown Originals Volume 2, our vinyl collaboration with Dogfish Head, that you can take home for free on record store day (April 20th) at participating record stores. Read more in our announcement post here.
Last year, we invited five talented acts to become mentors in the first ever Black Opry Residency, which culminated in performances hosted at World Cafe Live. While we’ll be following all their careers for years to come, we wanted to shout-out Black Opry member Denitia, whose sentimental, classic-country style with a contemporary update was recognized recently by County Music Television. Dubbed one of CMT’s “Next Women of Country” for 2024, Denitia is certainly an artist you don’t want to miss at any stage of her career. This video, “Meet Denitia,” finds XPN in the artist’s hometown of Nashville, then back to World Cafe Live in Philadelphia.
OMNI, Subpop’s twitchy post-punk signees, are one of the latest of bands to come through Eric Schuman’s Indie Rock Hit Parade series. Like other XPN faves Fountaines D.C. and Yard Act, OMNI’s style is reminiscent of niche scenes of the late 70s and beyond, but there’s an undeniable radio-friendly, catchiness in their quirk. Watch on to discover a new favorite in OMNI, and to see IRHP’s evolving visual style in crispy black and white with vintage pinball graphics.
New in the Key Studio world is Philly-local artist Chioke, an unforgettable rapper and pop performer. Besides joining us in the XPN studios, Chioke has also recently opened for Tierra Whack, and will perform at Roots Picnic ’24 alongside Jill Scott, Andre 3000, and Victoria Monet. Host Abdur Rahman introduced and interviewed Chioke in this special session. Watch below for the full performance and interview.
World Cafe contributing host Kallao spoke to singer-songwriter and long-time favorite at XPN about her latest record, Weird Faith. The former Lancaster resident spoke about releasing a new body of work into the world, and how it feels to process a breakup in song. Give the full interview a listen as a preview to Weird Faith if you’re not enjoying already.
