When Saturn Never Sleeps arrived at WXPN to record their Key Studio Session, they seemed so humble and unassuming. Two people at the door, two shoulder bags of samplers and laptops – a portable musical setup if ever there was one. But what legendary Philly DJ King Britt and multimedia artist Rucyl were able to do with the gear they brought was astounding. Their collaborative album, Yesterdays Machine, is a thrilling collection of ethereal pop songs, and you can hear performances of its highlights below. But here’s the fun part: those tracks are merely exceprts from a non-stop 40-minutes of freeform electronic improvisation they recorded in our studio. That’s the mission of Saturn Never Sleeps – to boldly explore with their sonic circuitry – and it’s best exhibited by the duo’s monthly parties at Silk City. Their next event happens next Tuesday the 29th of November, but to get a taste of what’s in store, tune in to XPN2 tomorrow night for a Thanksgiving edition of the Key Studio Sessions hour, where you’ll hear the soundscape King and Rucyl built for us, uniterrupted and in its entirety.
