It was a double shot of modern psychedelic rock last night at Festival Pier with a double-bill of long-running cult faves The Flaming Lips as well as current luminaries Tame Impala. The five-piece Impala went first, playing a set that drew on both its current record Lonerism as well as its 2010 debut Innerspeaker. The performance was backed by a LED screen projecting patterns, colors and shapes in constant motion; the Lips, on the other hand, went trademark full-force with smoke plumes, firecrackers, Wayne Coyne singing from atop an octopus-looking spacecraft (or a spacecraft-looking octopus) and more.
