Watch Philly alternative dance crew Minka record their new single for FeedbackLoop (playing Silk City on 10/9)
Philly alt-dance crew Minka has a sound that, at various points, reminds us of the dancefloor-ready jams of Passion Pit, The Killers and fun. But on their latest outing, we see a bit of growth into something a bit more contemplative. Recorded in collaboration with the Philly based new music incubator FeedbackLoop, “What If The Sun Failed To Rise?” is an existential pop song with bright string orchestrations, and songwriter Ari Rubin explains in a behind-the-scenes video that it has roots in childhood insomnia – “I thought…if I could stay up late enough, the morning would never arrive.” It sounds uber serious, but the band showcases its irreverent side as well in some behind-the-scenes footage, swigging from a bottle of whisky and goofing on recording vocal harmonies in a sunlit living room studio. Check it out the song and the making-of footage below – and catch Minka live on Wednesday, October 9th when they play Silk City. Perhaps they’ll break out some of the new songs they’ve been recording over at MilkBoy with producer Joe Gallagher.
