Lana Del Rey playing Skyline Stage at The Mann on May 11th
Lana Del Rey is playing the Skyline Stage at The Mann on Sunday, May 11th. Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 14th at 10AM. In the late summer of 2011, the music interwebs exploded in fascination over Del Rey’s “Video Games,” the song that catapulted her into internet and musical fame. Named “Best New Music” by Pitchfork, music critics and fans embraced the song. Pitchfork’s Ian Cohen wrote:
On her stirring debut single, New York singer-songwriter Lizzy Grant transforms into the more bombastically-named Lana Del Rey and absolutely wallows in it. While the song is husky and sensual in a way that hits the sweet spot Cat Power has abdicated since The Greatest, lyrically, “Video Games” reads more like a prelude to “Lived in Bars”. Strings well up and you’ll want to hear lines like “Heaven is a place on earth where you/ Tell me all the things you want to do,” and “I heard you like the bad girls, honey/ Is that true?” as knowing, rhetorical come-ons.

Her debut on Saturday Night Live in January, 2012 was universally panned as one of the worst performances on SNL, yet Del Rey determinedly pushed through the backlash and has become an international success, with songs like “Born To Die,” and “Blue Jeans,” and “Summertime Sadness.” She’s currently working on her next full length, Ultraviolence, with help from Black Keys’ frontman Dan Auerbach.
