Revisit a 2003 Califone performance at Villanova University, catch them at Johnny Brenda’s on 9/16
Chicago-born experimentalists Califone will be in town on September 16th for a show at Johnny Brenda’s, playing in support of last year’s striking LP Stitches. Eleven years ago, a five-piece Califone performed a set at Villanova University following the release of Quicksand/Cradlesnakes and a portion of the show was captured by Youtuber BBProductions4You. The video opens with album closer “Stepdaughter,” followed by a 10+ minute rendition of “Red” and ending with “Porno Starlet vs. Rodeo Clown,” taken from 2001’s Roomsound. Though this performance is over a decade old, the essence of Califone’s Stitches can be traced to these earlier songs, namely in the loose sounding bass and guitar, varied sources of percussion (including a steel drum) and an overall dusty, east-meets-west desert feel. Check out the video below. Tickets for Califone’s 21+ show with S. Carey go on sale this Friday and will be available here.
