OOIOO will bring its primal-futuristic Gamel to Johnny Brenda’s on Monday

One of many projects that has splintered off from the Boredoms during the Japanese experimentalists’ nearly 30-year history, OOIOO has proved to be the most enduring. The all-female ensemble was created in 1997 by Boredoms co-founder (and Flaming Lips album-title honoree) Yoshimi P-We and has evolved in parallel to its parent band, as chaotic, pranksterish noise has given way to electronic minimalism and trance-inducing rhythms.

OOIOO’s new CD, Gamel, draws inspiration from Japanese gamelan music, and the band will be accompanied by a pair of trained gamelan musicians for their first North American tour in seven years, which stops at Johnny Brenda’s on Monday. The album is one of the band’s strongest, sounding simultaneously tribal and alien, primitive and futuristic in a way that only these ecstatic conceptualists can. Traditional gamelan rhythms are accompanied by bizarre, sing-song chanting, only to be suddenly subsumed by psych-rock guitar freak-outs, which then crash upon the shores of art-rock repetitiveness. Given their penchant for euphoric live performances, this rare appearance should prove to be an explosively transcendent experience.
