Center city venue MilkBoy its third anniversary next month with three days of free shows. The party also marks the 20th anniversary of its parent company, MilkBoy the Studio. From August 14 to 16th, the venue will host phenomenal performances from artists like The Ataris, Cheerleader, and the Lawsuits. To help you map out your show-going, we’ve highlighted an artist (or two) for each day.
On Thursday, Black Landlord will be taking the stage. The hip-hop group, led by Philly expat Maxx, recently played at this year’s 2nd Street Festival. A few years ago, they did a phenomenal Key Studio Session. They also released a new track, “Shirt Off” earlier this year. They will be playing alongside NYC rock group Dirty Gems. Listen to “Dear God” by Black Landlord below.
On Friday, Cheerleader will take the stage. The new and upcoming group recently moved to the Philly area. In an intimate interview with The Key’s Kate Bracaglia, Cheerleader explained their band’s name as “We’d always cheer each other on.” This sort of warm supportive atmosphere is part of what makes their music carry a feel-good, comfortable pop vibe. Their full length album will be out sometime around the end of this year. Cheerleader will be playing alongside Alright Juniour, Ataris and Strap. Listen to “Waiting, Waiting” below.
Last but not least, Our Griffins and The Lawsuits will be playing on Saturday. Recently, Our Griffins premiered their newest song “Run Through The Mines” during a Cover Club Session. They also released a couple of covers, like Strand of Oak’s “Last to Swim” and Johnny Cash’s “Another Man Done Gone.” They’ll be joined by #xpnfest’s The Lawsuits. The five piece recently released their newest video, a surreal “Dreaming #26” from 2013’s Cool Cool Cool. Catch the bands, along with Mo Lowda and the Humble. Listen to Our Griffin’s “The Rest of the World Doesn’t Know You’re a Hero” below.
