XPNFest Recap: Rodrigo y Gabriela bring the first day of #xpnfest to a close on the River Stage
Mexican acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela closed out the first night of the festival with a striking set on the River Stage. The fusion / rock pair performed songs from their three albums, going for long stretches of time before addressing the audience. That was fine by everyone in the crowd though, as they were happily wrapped in the trance of an eclectic and electrifying instrumental set.
Though there were no lyrics in Rodrigo y Gabriela’s songs, there were certainly stories being told. The lyrical set worked in movements like classical composition, though there were several moments where the performance took on an improvisational feel. Gabriela left the stage for a few minutes to give Rodrigo the crowd’s full attention, which he quickly stunned with some supersonic scale work. The sounds that the duo got out of their acoustic guitars were nothing short of amazing – we heard everything from gritty and emotionally charged strumming to romantic, intricate picking. Towards the end Rodrigo introduced the “karaoke” portion of the night before stepping into some covers of Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd and Radiohead. If the lawn hadn’t been so full, people would have definitely been doing some Mexican dances down in front.
