Today’s Free at Noon came from England to deliver a spectacular set of electronic tunes. Though you may have to say their name a few times to get the hang of it, Fujiya & Miyagi‘s simple lyrics and addictive beats only took seconds to reel in the audience at World Cafe Live. Members Steve Lewis, David Best, Matt Hainsby, and Lee Adams recently released their fifth studio album Artificial Sweeteners.

The band projected an air of cool-guys-vibing-in-their-living-room as they kicked off their set with “Flaws” a track off of their new album with lead singer Best keeping his eyes closed for most of the song. Though Fujiya and Miyaji treated everyone to a live listen of new songs such as “Acid to My Alkaline” and the title track “Artificial Sweeteners”, they were sure to play a mix of all their albums aside from their first Electro Karaoke in the Negative Style. Each song flowed seamlessly into the next without much commentary from those commanding the stage save for a few gentle “thank you”s before slamming the drums to mark a new beginning. As expected they performed their arguably greatest hit “Uh” with a head bobbing reaction from the crowd as Best marked every word he whispered with a heavy hip jive. However, the strongest bit of the set came during their performance of “Minestrone” a jam laced with satanic elements and a blood curling screech that managed to be eerily pleasant.

They followed the spooky sound of “Minestrone” with a lighter and sweeter (perhaps a nod to their new album) tune. The set was rounded off with a performance of “Tinsel & Glitter”, a key-heavy song that required Hainsby to abandon the bass and offer a hand to Lewis. Before Best slowly removed his guitar and exited stage left the guys were sure to leave their mark with a proper wordless jam. Fujiya & Miyaji will be performing tonight at Johnny Brenda’s.
