Indie-soul group Fitz And The Tantrums brought a high-energy performance and dance party to a sold-out crowd at the Electric Factory on Friday night. Led by frontman Michael Fitzpatrick, the six-piece group played a dynamic set consisting of songs off their sophomore LP More Than Just A Dream (2013) and their debut album Pickin’ Up the Pieces(2010), as well as a fun cover of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).”Tossing out light-up wristbands before the set, the band encouraged the crowd to clap along to light up the room and to dance during the entire show. And that show was impressive, with powerful vocals, interesting and complex instrumentation, charismatic stage presence, and stunning lighting effects.

Towards the middle of the set, Noelle Scaggs (co-vocals and tambourine) dedicated their hit song “Out of My League” to the audience. The band slowed things down a little a few songs later and encouraged the audience to wave their phones and lighters along to “Last Raindrop.” During the encore, Fitz introduced “MoneyGrabber” by asking the crowd to crouch to the ground before everyone eventually jumping up and dancing as confetti canons filled the venue with clouds of bright colors. With their lively performance and catchy tunes, Fitz and the Tantrums got its fans dancing unlike any other live show I have been to.

Opening the show was electronic pop group Big Data. Introduced and narrated by a digitized robotic voice, the group played a set in support of the upcoming release of their full-length album 2.0. Self-described by Big Data music producer and performer Alan Wilkis as creating “paranoid electronic pop music,” the group’s interaction between electronic beats and sounds, vocals, and the robotic narration successfully met that description. Midway through their set, they played a digitized cover of Hall & Oates “Private Eyes.” Big Data’s upbeat tunes amped up the crowd for the rest of the night.
