Michigan-LA transplant Garrett Borns (stylized BØRNS) took to NonCOMM’s PRX stage early Thursday night, and immediately blew the minds of everyone standing in WCL upstairs. His falsetto is unparalleled, even androgynous, and his grooves stood somewhere between the dance beats of MGMT and the dreaminess of Beach House.

“Past Lives” was a personal favorite of mine and definitely got the crowd moving with its danceable drum machine beat and ethereal synthesizer, with awesome breaks featuring just drum machine and Borns’ voice in its lower register. At one point, Borns even dedicated a cover of Elton John’s “Bennie and The Jets” to all the “drinkers, non-drinkers, and hydrators” in the crowd. As Borns himself said “they [the hydrators] know what’s up.”
