Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats are riding high with their new self-titled release, due to the success of their song “S.O.B.,” a Gotta Hear Song of the Week on WXPN this past August. Rateliff’s self-titled album was produced by Richard Swift and released via Stax Records; on it, he’s born again, touched by the fire of R&B.

There’s no denying the gritty soul of “S.O.B.”, and many of the other songs on his record. Born in Missouri, Rateliff currently resides in Denver, where he moved to as a teenager to do missionary work. R&B and soul music has always been in his musical DNA even as his previous records were introspective, more acoustic affairs. In interviews he’s cited Sam Cooke, The Chambers Brothers, Otis Redding and The Band (specifically their version of “Baby Don’t Do It”) as inspiration for his new collection of songs.

Below, watch Rateliff and the band recorded live in the studio at WFUV in New York for VuHaus. Rateliff and the Night Sweats play the TLA on Saturday, November 7th.
