This weekend, WXPN is taking a trip down 70s soul music memory lane for a Super Number 1 Soul Hits of the 70s weekend. WXPN hosts Dan Reed and David Dye (Funky Friday, World Cafe), will be playing every number one soul hit from 1970-1979.

While the early 70s soul and R&B charts were filled with hits from Motown, Stax, Hi Records, and others – not to mention songs by The Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye on the charts – soul music began to twist and turn around as the decade progressed. Funk, psychedelic soul, quiet storm, the Sound of Philly, and disco infiltrated the consciousness of pop music. And of course, we had Soul Train.

WXPN’s Super Number 1 Soul Hits of the 70s weekend takes place this Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 am. Over the two days, there’ll be 20 hours of classics, from one hit wonders (I’m talking to you Carl Douglas), to legends like Earth, Wind & Fire, The Commodores, Kool & The Gang, and many more. Wearing hot pants is not a requirement to listen.

Below, watch a sampling of songs you’ll be hearing during WXPN’s Super Number 1 Hits of the 70s weekend, and be sure to follow along the #XPNSoul hashtag on Saturday and Sunday.
