In 2011, Philly’s DJ Jazzy Jeff and Toronto R&B singer Merna (formerly Ayah) released “Xmas Time. It’s a song recently rediscovered by NPR Music’s Cedric Shine for the Songs We Love series, who says it “feels almost criminal that this song isn’t better known.”

Shine continues:

The melody is soothing and familiar, perfect music for some eggnog by the fireplace — or by your building-controlled furnace. It’s also refreshing, a modern soulful approach to music of the season. The holidays are all about spending time with family, and “Xmas Time” is a welcome addition to the classics we’ve come to know and love, while hanging with loved ones.

Below, listen to “Xmas Time.” And don’t miss DJ Jazzy Jeff’s new holiday mix that you can download for free here featuring Christmas jawns from The Jackson 5, Donny Hathaway, TLC, Cut Master D.C., Nat King Cole, Stevie Wonder, The Treacherous Three, Run DMC, and others.
