Slingshot Dakota deal with real life on “Lewlyweds”
Things are settling down for Slingshot Dakota in some ways and picking up steam in others. In an NPR article that premieres the Bethlehem pop-punk duo’s new track “Lewlyweds,” recently-married Carly Comando and Tom Patterson discussed the stressful, unneighborly circumstances that put a damper on their days as newlyweds. But with their living situation now under control, Comando and Patterson can focus on the release of their new record Break (out March 11th via Topshelf) and the subsequent tour that will take them down to SXSW.
Comando makes no bones about the inspiration for “Lewlyweds” in the lyrics; it’s a direct result of dealing with pests both two- and multi-legged. But the sound of the song isn’t angry or resentful. With blown-out keys and Comando’s gentle delivery, “Lewlyweds” feels like the sigh you let out when thinking about something that can’t be changed. It’s melancholy while still being warm, resigned with just a hint of snark in the lines “Let’s make a toast to the newlyweds who can’t sleep in their beds / you took it away from me.”
