Intercultural Journeys bringing Alex Shaw’s Mandinga Experiment to International House in March
On March 11th at 8 pm, Intercultural Journeys will be hosting the next performance in their concert series at International House Philly, Alex Shaw: The Mandinga Experiment. Vocalist/percussionist and music educator Alex Shaw, who is also the curator of Intercultual Journeys, Director of Alô Brazil, and actively engaged with Live Connections as a board member and teaching artist, will be showing a performance that combines both visual art and musical performance to demonstrate the Afro-Brazilian martial art Capoeira Angola.
Shaw will be joined by featured musicians, dancers, and capoeiristas from both the US and Brazil. The Mandinga Experiment will feature traditional songs as well as original compositions.
Before each performance, Intercultural Journeys also hosts a casual pot luck dinner discussion called “Food for Thought” in the East Alcove of the International House. Discussion will begin at 6 pm before the show and the topic is “Capoeira and Black Consciousness.” Intercultural Journeys asks anyone who wishes to join the discussion to RSVP here.
Tickets for The Mandinga Experiment are $15 GA, $10 for IHP members, and $8 for students. They can be purchased here. Watch Alex Shaw perform “Dia de Praia” below.
