Man oh man are we thankful for Philebrity’s righteous Noontime Nuggets feature, because it’s got us slamming around the house this Sunday morning to this vintage recording of The Only Band That Matters: U.S. Edition (The Replacements) playing Philly.
The gig in question took place 30 years ago on the 6th of February as Westerberg, Stinson, Stinson and Mars toured in support of their 1985 record Tim. It’s a brutally loud audience recording that captures the energy of the room in the best way imaginable – and the chaos is all the more entertaining for being set in the stately Huston Hall on the University of Pennsylvania campus.
The setlist is 27 god dang songs packed into an hour and fifteen minutes, from “Tommy Gets his Tonsils Out” to “Take Me Down To the Hospital,” with a half dozen covers of The Ramones (“I Don’t Want You”), Chuck Berry (“Maybelline”) and more.
As the folks at Philebs said, “Thirty years on and this show still sounds as solid as it must have to attendees back then.”
Show audio and setlist below, via YouTube and The Replacements Live Archive Project. Tommy Stinson plays the XPoNential Music Festival on Friday, July 22nd; tickets and more information can be found here.
