The Nite Owls debut with jazzy “Nite Owl’s Theme”
When we first met West Philly emcee / producer Rolled Gold earlier this year in an interview about his Salty EP, he mentioned wanting to start a soul group. Well, here it is. Gold (aka Harry Metz) and his cousin Nate Forman created The Nite Owls, a 60s/70s soul and jazz duo that just released its debut single.
The instrumentation on “Nite Owl’s Theme” is rounded out by contributing musicians on flute, trumpet and glockenspiel. It’s classic and clean on its own, but also leaves a lot of room for potential use as a hip hop bed.
Over email Metz tells us:
It carries a funky groove similar to soul groups of the 60’s & 70’s, but as an instrumental it paints a picture that could accompany a plethora of different movie scenes. From the perspective of a hip hop fan who loves to learn about older music through sampling, this song may be just as satisfying to fans of Motown, Stax & Philly soul as it would be to fans of Wu Tang Clan, MF Doom & The Roots.
Listen to the single below and read more about Metz here. The Nite Owls make their live debut at a Memorial Day concert at Gloria Dei Church in South Philadelphia; check out a flyer for the show below.
