When we last heard from Chicago’s Ryley Walker he was lending his yelps and frenetic guitar playing to the wonderful songs on his sophomore LP Primrose Green. But it’s a year later and now we find him in the company of drummer Charles Rumback, expanding his avant-garde vernacular.

The duo released a collaborative, improvised guitar, piano and drum album over the weekend for Record Store Day called Cannots and brought the project to the First Unitarian Church last night. As you’ll hear on the recording by PhilaTaper below, it was an evening focused on the nuances of and relationships between instruments: Walker and Rumback jammed for almost an hour through loud desert tinged blues and quieter exploratory sections.
