This Day in Music History: Eric Clapton records “I Shot the Sheriff,” Weezer releases their self-titled debut

1960 – The Silver Beetles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe, and Tommy Moore) audition for promoter Larry Parnes and singer Billy Fury for a job as Fury’s backing group. Parnes ends up selecting them for singer Johnny Gentle’s upcoming tour of Scotland instead.

1963 – The Rolling Stones have their first recording session. The band lays down a cover of the Chuck Berry song “Come On” at Olympic Studios in London. This becomes the their first release on June 7th via Decca Records.

1964 – Dusty Springfield makes her US television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show.

1965 – The Rolling Stones record a version of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” at Chess Studios in Chicago with Brian Jones on harmonica. The group re-records it two days later at RCA Studios in Hollywood with a different beat and the Gibson Maestro fuzzbox that Keith Richards had recently acquired.

1969 – The Turtles and the Temptations play the White House upon the request of the President’s daughter, Tricia Nixon. Stories circulate concerning members of the group allegedly snorted cocaine on Abraham Lincoln’s desk, fueled by the fact that Mark Volman fell off the stage 5 times during the Turtles’ performance.

1974 – Eric Clapton records “I Shot the Sheriff.”

1975 – Apple Records officially dissolves.

1985 – The Go-Go’s announce their breakup, which lasts until a reunion in 1990. They continue to work together sporadically into the ’10s.

1986 – Paul Simon plays three songs from his upcoming album, Graceland, on Saturday Night Live. He’s backed by South African musicians, including the vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who perform with him on “Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes.” Their appearance on the show and the subsequent album introduced them to a global audience, but also caused problems for Simon when he faced criticism for violating the cultural boycott of the country that was placed in an attempt to stop Apartheid.

1994 – Weezer releases their self-titled debut (aka The Blue Album).
