Knowing that they hail from Portland, Oregon, puts Joseph into a certain organic light when you’re listening to them. But the trio of sisters, who will release their debut album I’m Alone, No You’re Not this summer via ATO, really do embody a naturalness at the root of their sound. They opened the downstairs stage of NonCOMM’s second night with songs from that new LP, pairing a simple acoustic guitar with three stunning voices.

Natalie, Allison and Meegan were clearly excited to be sharing their new songs with the crowd, especially album single “White Flag.” It could be the band’s mission statement, a song written in “response to the things that scare you.” Incredibly tight and perfectly matched harmonies give way to powerful singing at the chorus, as Natalie sings “Burn the white flag” in opposition to giving up a hard fight. That balance of strength in character and tenderness in their love and support for each other comes through as they pass around the role of lead singer and back-up vocalists. It was a magical set from a new group that had the rapt attention of full audience.
