On Sunday morning, local musician Corey Bernard passed away suddenly at 22. The New Jersey native and multi-instrumentalist spent the last few years playing bass in The Superweaks alongside his brother, Evan.

The announcement came from Evan via The Superweaks’ Facebook page. He wrote:

My baby brother, our bass player Corey passed away today. I loved him so much. It was incredible to be able to write music with him, play unbelievable shows with our favourite bands we could only dream of as children. I will always cherish spending countless hours bickering and farting in the van driving around the country. I will never, ever forget the experiences we have shared. Thank you for always challenging me to be a better person. I will always love you Corey.

Since then, an outpouring of love and grief has been shared on social media, many posts including pictures of a large, bearded, always smiling guy. His friends and family are thanking him for constantly making them laugh, always being kind and for supporting them in following their dreams. From lifelong friends to met-him-one-time-on-tour acquaintances, everyone in Corey’s presence was immediately aware of his warmth.

Friends in Spirit of the Beehive, Tigers Jaw and Slingshot Dakota have been paying tribute on Twitter and Instagram. Join them in celebrating the life of Corey and get a glimpse of his goofy personality in the video for “Kick It” below.

Thank you @nannaventer for this nostalgic and touching illustration and memory ・・・ Day 151. On Saturday our friend Corey died. 😪 Feels so weird saying that because it feel like just the other day we were pestering him on his birthday in Florida. It was @ben_rausch and i’s weird dream come true going on tour with Corey and his brother @oldtits and their band @thesuperweaks, spending long hours in a cramped cozy van trailing @puptheband @modernbaseball and @jeffrosenstock. They played #fest on Corey’s birthday, and he was so adamant to leave straight after the show, drive through the night and go hang out with @fumanchucupcakes and @beth_jackson_art in Charlotte for a detour on the way home. This drawing is based on a photo we took before we hit the road again. Beth and Andy were selling the house, so it was a pretty sentimental moment for everyone. We got home in the small hours that next day and said cheers to him for the last time. We’ll miss you, Corey. Thanks for the epic adventure. Pic by @docbag.
