Doylestown-based musician and Circa Survive frontman Anthony Green has spent much of his musical career exploring and articulating his ever-present battle with his demons. With the release of his fourth solo album, Pixie Queen, due out September 9th, Green has channeled that into a new song and music video for opening track “You’ll Be Fine.”
In the video, we get a physical representation of what it may feel like being dragged and pushed around by the demons in your life. Green starts on a slow, desolate walk down the beach in Avalon, N.J., the dim blue sky revealing it’s either early morning or dusk. This scene sounds all the more like something out of a Backstreet Boys video and less like the antics of the fiery punk Green is known to be on stage. That is, until the pretty, twinkly video (shot in just one take) pans to the ocean to show a man hurtling at Green. For the rest of the video we watch as Green struggles to break free of the man holding him down as he brings him into the ocean.
The song is said to be a very special, introspective endeavor for Green, and the video, directed by Andrew Swartz, tried to capture that. “The song was put together with parts that I had since before [my son] James was born,” Green said. “I was terrified about being a bad father, and I knew I was a bad husband so I was dealing with a lot of fear around that.”
“You’ll Be Fine” is a solid first showing for the album, keeping with the musicality that makes his solo releases so enjoyable and highlighting how diverse his talents lie between this work and that of his other bands. The track opens with the line “I’ve gone out too far / may not make it back,” which makes the ocean imagery in the video all the more striking.
For Pixie Queen, Green teamed up Philly producer Will Yip and it will be available via his label Memory Music. You can catch Green this fall as he embarks on a 22-stop tour starting in September. He’ll make his way home on October 1st to Union Transfer, alongside Citizen frontman Mat Kerekes and Secret Space.
