David Wax Museum was just as excited as fans were to be rescheduled to day three of XPoNential Festival after having their set cancelled due to torrential downpours yesterday afternoon. Not only did they stay the night to perform, but if fans just couldn’t get enough, the band announced during their set that they will be returning to Philly for New Year’s Eve 2017 with a celebration performance at Johnny Brenda’s. The band counts the venue as one of their favorite in all of the country.

The country-tinged folkers jammed on the Jerseyarts.com Marina Stage with an assortment of instruments including the accordion and violin. The band has a distinct Mexican flair at the heart of their songs, like “Dark Night of the Heart” and “Blood Jump.”

The band took a moment to shout out WXPN program director Bruce Warren, as have many performers this weekend. They submitted their music into the station, and when Warren played it on air he gave David Wax Museum a message, if they could hear it. “If you’re listening, I want to book you for XPN Fest,” Wax recounts Warren saying. Although he didn’t hear it himself, a dedicated listener did. After years of trying to coordinate, the “stars aligned” as Wax says, and they were booked for XPN Fest 2016. Luckily, the rain didn’t crush that chance.

At one point in the set, the audience came together for a chant in unison of “thank you” to the band for being so flexible with their schedules and coming back to play.
