Creepoid come full circle on “Dripping Eyelids”
Philly psychedelic punk four-piece Creepoid is returning to its roots, in more ways than one.
Firstly, they’ve recently brought founding guitarist Petejoe Urban back into the fold — he took time off from the band following the run behind its 2014 self-titled record. Second, there’s the stepped-back tones on their latest. While Creepoid’s releases have gotten progressively heavier and heavier, with last year’s Cemetery Highrise Slum being the hardest-hitting in the band’s catalog, an advance listen to bits of the newly announced Burner EP finds going all the way back. Earlier than self-titled, earlier than Horse Heaven, back all the way to their debut EP Yellow Life Giver.
That EP was recorded before the band started really chasing their songs down the fuzz pedal and distortion rabbit hole — back when they worked to harness acoustic guitars and murmuring vocals into a taut intensity. And the first song they released from Burner, the unsettlingly-titled “Dripping Eyelids,” has that same interplay of haunting hollow-body strums and nervy minor key melancholia. Give a listen to the track here, via Brooklyn Vegan, and revisit Yellow Life Giver here and the Kurt Heasley-starring video for “Dried Out” below, for a now-and-then-and-then-again point of comparison.
Creepoid celebrates the release of Burner this Friday, November 25th at Kung Fu Necktie. Tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
