Listen to Ásgeir’s new dreamscape “Unbound”
Between the haunting “King And Cross” and a breathtaking Nirvana cover, Icelandic troubadour Ásgeir got on our radar in a big way in 2014. Today, we got word via NPR Music that he’s getting ready to follow up his English language debut In The Silence with Afterglow, due out on May 5th via One Little Indian.
As Ásgeir told NPR’s Bob Boilen, the new album was finished and ready to be delivered to the label, but one final idea for a song called “Unbound” crept onto the table. “When we decided to give ‘Unbound’ a chance at the last minute we decided to set a rule for ourselves — we were not going to spend too much time on it,”Ásgeir said. “My brother Steini then wrote the lyrics, which are about living in the now and not getting stuck on the past and what we can’t change.”
“Unbound” blend of woozy synthesizers and enchanting melodies phasing to and fro, placing Ásgeir’s plaintive folk in a progressive electronic-psych setting for a totally thrilling four minutes. Listen to it below, and watch Ásgeir’s performance of “King and Cross” at NonCOMM 2014.
