Xiu Xiu will inspire you to “Get Up” with arresting new single
The last we heard from Xiu Xiu, they were playing the music of David Lynch’s cult TV classic on the aptly titled Plays The Music of Twin Peaks. It was a match made “in heaven” (wink, wink), but now, they’re gearing up for the release of a new album, Forget. It’s out later this month, and you can stream its latest single now. Check out the video for “Get Up” below.
While the band certainly didn’t have to stretch much to fit their sound to Twin Peaks, fans of that last release will be excited to see some of the show’s creep factor intact here. This is a slow burn of a track that hinges predominantly on a steady drum machine and solitary guitar, but as this is Xiu Xiu we’re talking about, it still has its fair share of explosive moments. The track’s uneasy calm is frequently interrupted by ghostly reverbs, synth flourishes, and a fantastic moment at the 1:40 mark where Jamie Stewart delivers a blood-curdling, “RISE FROM THE DEAD!” Things really take off in its final moments, though, where pouding 80s drums and razor-sharp, arpeggiated leads bring the track to a satisfyingly fuzzy finish. It’s as unsettling as it is kind of inspiring.
Xiu Xiu’s Forget is out February 24th via Polyvinyl Records. If you want to catch them live, they headline Boot & Saddle on Friday, April 7th. For tickets and more information, head over to XPN’s Concert Calendar.
