Listen to The Dove and the Wolf’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye”
Cover songs often pose a tricky predicament. Do you stay as close to the original as you can? Completely transform the song into your own? It’s very risky territory, especially when covering a song by a legend like Leonard Cohen. But all this didn’t hinder Philly-based indie pop duo, The Dove and the Wolf, from taking the leap and covering Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye.” And I’m super glad it didn’t, because Paloma Gill and Lou Hayat-Camard’s take on the sweet and simple folk tune is a beautiful gem of a cover.
In the version — found on Amazon’s Love Me Not compilation — The Dove and the Wolf retain the delicate nature of the song, while adding just the right amount of production with their own breezy, atmospheric elements and haunting harmonies.
The comp is for those without a valentine on Valentine’s, described as “exclusive songs for the haters and the heartbroken.” Check out the snippet of the studio version of The Dove and the Wolf’s cover here.
Though The Dove and the Wolf don’t have any tour dates approaching, you can relive their live performance of the Cohen cover when they opened for The Districts at Johnny Brenda’s below.
