The Mountain Goats announce 17th record Goths with the whimsical tale of “Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds”
NO COMPED VOCALS. NO PITCH CORRECTION. NO GUITARS.
Those three statements dwell within the announcement of The Mountain Goats’ new record Goths, set to be released on May 19th. To hold us over until then, the band released the first single from the album with the Sisters of Mercy callout “Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds”.
Keeping with the aforementioned promises, TMG performed the record as a four piece featuring all sorts of woodwinds from Matt Douglas in lieu of the six-string classic. Despite that, “Andrew Eldritch…” maintains a solid yet quirky sound that’s relaxing in nature yet whimsical in action. Lead singer and songwriterJohn Darnielle floats across his own sweet vocals to tell a folk-type tale of fancy dreams in the clubs of dreary ol’ London. It’s a wonderful shout out to the goth legends while at the same time putting forth a sound perfect for these deadly enjoyable summer days in the middle of February.
