Join Katie Ellen’s “Sad Girls Club” in anthemic new single
It took a good two seconds into Katie Ellen’s new single, “Sad Girls Club,” for me to be completely hooked. Yes, I would like to join the club, please. Is there a mailing list? I will sign now, thank you.
The personal, lyrically-driven anthem of a song mashes together any kind of insecurity one might feel for being different or straying from the collective normativity that is life (sigh), and effectively stomps it to bits with clattering cymbals and searing guitars.
Before playing the jam live, front-woman Anika Pyle reads off the powerful “Sad Girls Club Manifesto,” which details the Club’s mantra of having the strength to be vulnerable, show emotion, and continue being beautifully not normal.
I can only imagine how powerful this song is performed live, when the ending slow-build chant of “sad girls don’t make good wives” cathartically rips through the venue. Now that’s going to warrant some goosebumps, indeed.
Katie Ellen’s upcoming album, Cowgirl Blues, is available on July 14th, with an epic record release show the day prior at PhilaMOCA with support from Field Mouse and Roger Harvey.
