Meet Dreamswell: The doomy post-rock project of Hemming, Madalean Gauze and friends
In her band Hemming, singer-guitarist Candice Martello plays yearning, melancholic ballads in a fervent singer-songwriter style; as a solo artist, Madalean Gauze plays energized art rock brimming with riffs and hooks. Together, they turn the volume way up and the tempo way down in the new four-piece band Dreamswell. With a lineup rounded out by Gina Piccari on guitar and Joe Martello on drums, the band lowkey debuted with a few shows last fall at Boot and Saddle and Kung Fu Necktie. This week, their debut EP hit the internet.
A four-song set titled Act 1, it sounds from the opening notes like the folks in Dreamswell spend a lot of time listening to Sleep, The Melvins, Bardo Pond and the like; the opening “Stranger” roars and rages over six minutes of doomy chords and thundering drums, with Martello (the non-drumming one) and Piccari’s voices floating in and out of the clouds; previously-released single “Illusionist” swells with vibrant and meditative e-bow guitar and a build somewhere between Acid Mothers Temple and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Listen to the entire Act 1 EP below, and see Dreamswell live when it opens for INVSN at MilkBoy on Friday, September 8th. Tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
