Watch Naeemah Maddox perform “Apple” for Philly’s Random Tea Sessions
In July, prolific Brooklyn-via-Philly singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Naeemah Maddox released her excellent second album, Vile Tyrant and the Middle Men. The nine-track LP, full of dense and quirky songs, is a self-described “statement analyzing the effect of mankind’s struggles on a macro (political) and micro (personal) level.” Recorded in her West Philly apartment over a five-year period, Maddox played most of the instruments on the record, including flute, violin, keyboard, and bass, not to mention her beautifully layered vocals.
Maddox recently performed a stripped-down version of Vile Tyrant and the Middle Men‘s lead track, “Apple,” for Philly’s Random Tea Sessions. Maddox, on vocals and guitar, is joined by Matt Hollenberg on baritone guitar. The video’s close-up shots show the musician comfortably in her element; and as mellow as the song is, Maddox will have you tapping your feet along. Here’s hoping Maddox graces Philly with a live show soon.
The Key’s own John Morrison recently talked with Maddox about her ambitious songwriting, her many influences, and her long-time-coming musical journey. Read the interview here.
Established in 2012, the Random Tea Sessions showcase local Philadelphia musicians and are filmed in the cozy atmosphere of Northern Liberties’ Random Tea Room. Watch the Maddox’s session below, and check out some more sessions here.
