Weller hangs with pals self-doubt and paranoia on new track, ‘Learning Curves’
Philly’s cheeriest basement dudes, Weller, are gearing up to release their first full length, the self-titled Weller, on October 20th. But before then, we get a slice of the upcoming album by ways of their new single, “Learning Curves.”
Produced by Jake Ewald, the track radiates the energy of Modern Baseball and the narrative storytelling of Slaughter Beach, Dog, while all the while wrapped in a blanket of trademark wholesome Weller fun.
But it can’t possibly be all fun here, we find out, so it’s gotta be games. At least that’s what frontman Harrison Nantz seems to believe, as the track finds us pacing anxiously around with him on a Friday night; a dismal one, accompanied by pals self-doubt and sabotage, where Nantz mentally picks apart a relationship that seems to be going completely — well fine, actually.
It was a good week, Nantz reminds himself. But maybe too good, we practically hear him squinting in detective-like uncertainty as the persistent questions, “What’s your game? What’s your angle?” boomerang in thought again and again — only to be vanquished by the bright clarity of a Saturday morning.
Listen to “Learning Curve” below. Then, catch Weller cap off a stacked tour this fall with Kississippi and Three Man Cannon with a sweet basement show at JJ’s Diner on November 4th. Find info on the event here.
