Final Fridays at the Philadelphia Museum of Art always provide a fantastically curated night of entertainment that’s hard to find elsewhere, and the upcoming AfroFuturist Costume Ball is certainly no exception. On Friday, Oct. 27, the museum’s Great Stair Hall will fill with the sights and sounds of Afrofuturism — if you’re not familiar, that’s an artistic and cultural movement centered around Black liberation through a futuristic sci-fi lens. The AfroFuturist Affair, along with Black Quantum Futurism and Philadelphia Assembled, have planned the event, their 7th annual, as a celebration of AfroFuturist and Black speculative music, art, design and creativity.
As the name Costume Ball would suggest, attendees are encouraged to come dressed in their best AfroFuturist or sci-fi garb. The evening kicks off at 5 p.m. with everything from Tarot card readings and film screenings to body painting and mask making. And like any good costume party should involve, there’ll also be a fashion show and best-dressed competition. The highlight of the night may be the musical performances, though — the event’s organizers have enlisted the likes of King Britt, Moor Mother and Sammus to set the mood with Afrofuturistic tunes. MovaKween and :3LON will also perform.
DJ and composer King Britt recently released After… under his Fhloston Paradigm project earlier this year — listen here. Watch Moor Mother’s video for “Parallel Nightmares,” from the her Fetish Bones LP, below.
The event is free after admission to the museum. Find more information on the museum’s website and on the event’s Facebook page.
