Palm’s “Pearly” continues to rattle rock predictability in their trippy, tropical paradise
Palm‘s EP Shadow Expert was released just mere months back, but the four-piece indie gang is already putting out new tunes. First of which is a new track called “Pearly” that comes ahead of their upcoming album, Rock Island, and will be out on February 9th with Carpark Records.
Serving as the first track of the new LP, “Pearly” welcomes visitors to Rock Island with an immediate introduction to their characteristically uncharacteristic sound. With them, it seems that their version of a pattern is having no pattern at all; a method that effectively rattles rock music’s (often) predictable core to no end.
True to their ability to create immersive soundscapes, this particular track oozes a tropical feel — you know, if that breezy paradise was dropped into a warped and trippy video game. And those sea-life, steel drums sounds you’re hearing? That’s all coming from a goshdang guitar. Speaking in an interview with The Fader, the band discussed some of their tech techniques on the track. And if you’re a music tech / production plebeian like I, this news might come as some mega wild, music magic stuff.
Maybe it’s just me and my fledgling-yet-enthralled working knowledge of production, but after doing a bit of research on what the heck a MIDI pickup is, I’ve decided to equate the process to downright wizardry. Because there’s not even one lick of keyboard on this track — or on the entire record for that matter, as Palm’s Kasra Kurt states it’s “almost all guitar-based.”
Listen to “Pearly” below and be transported to an even more tangible space via the song’s accompanying visual. As Palm’s currently on tour supporting Girlpool, they’ll punctuate the run with two headlining gigs at Brooklyn’s brand new venue, Elsewhere. Catch info on that here.
