Year-End Mania is the Key’s annual survey of the things below the surface that made 2017 incredible. Today, WXPN afternoon host and music director Dan Reed shares his 2017 highlights.

THE AFGHAN WHIGS AT THE APOLLO THEATRE – it was great to see GREG DULLI & co. at this iconic venue in Harlem in late May

ANNIVERSARY DINNER AT VERNICK – Ann and I enjoyed our 19th wedding anniversary at this creative yet comfortable restaurant on Walnut Street… outstanding food, better service

WXPN 70’S A TO Z – I loved it all… two weeks of nothing but 70’s goodness, all day, all night… I was personally stuck playing too many CAT STEVENS songs, but…

BECK’S NEW ALBUM – “Colors” may be his poppiest yet, and he does it well… Pitchfork gave it a 6.3, but I give Pitchfork a solid 5.2 for good coverage, but WAY too much self-importance

SLAUGHTER BEACH, DOG “104 DEGREES” – I’m obsessed with this tune at the moment… listen once and you’ll be hooked too… Philly band, Philly subject matter

WAR ON DRUGS LIVE AT DELL MUSIC CENTER – very, very cool to see this great band at this iconic venue on 9/21, and for a good cause, too (CONNOR BARWIN’s M.T.W.B Foundation)

SEASON FOUR OF “PEAKY BLINDERS” ON NETFLIX – end of the yewar treat for sure

“FRED & DAN’S RECORD PARTY” AT DAWSON STREET PUB – it’s our monthly “bowling night” for music heads, with my pal FRED BERMAN as my co-pilot… always fun
