Jazz Adams, Marisa Dabice, Sadie DuPuis, and Andrea Jacome are Shifting the Gaze at this years Women in Music panel
Shifting the Gaze: Women in Music is back for its third year at Kelly Writers House next Wednesday. An event panel series founded and curated by music writer, photographer, filmmaker, and U Penn senior, Amanda Silberling, Shifting the Gaze was created in order to “explore the intersectional challenges that women and other marginalized people face in the music industry.”
While last year’s installment featured punk icon, Alice Bag, this year’s boasts the four Philly-dwelling rockstars, Jazz Adams, Marisa Dapice, Sadie Dupuis, and Andrea Jacome, who will lead a conversation discussing these intersectional challenges, and incite dialogue as to how to make our community more inclusive. If you don’t already know about these absolutely kickass ladies, read on to get a feel of just the gist of the many roles these local leaders hold.
Jazz Adams is the lead singer of the local experimental trio, Old Maybe, along with serving as a founding member of the DIY booking collective, All Mutable, which curates inclusive bills representing people of color, women, and LGBTQ+ folk. Marisa Dapice fronts the kickass Philly punk fave, Mannequin Pussy, and is stated in the FB event page to be running for city council in 2024 because heck yes.
Sadie Dupuis is the unreal guitarist and vocalist of Speedy Ortiz and the everything of the political-minded, sparkly-pop project, Sad13, while also being involved with a number of non-profit organizations; and Andrea Jacome is an active cultural organizer and former Community Organizing Director at Girls Rock Philly.
Shifting the Gaze: Women in Music takes place on Wednesday, January 31st and is free and open to the public. Find more info on the event here, and jam to some of the speakers’ tunes below.
