When you think of live music in a coffee shop, what might come to mind is someone in the corner with an acoustic guitar singing soft, sleepy songs. Fortunately, La Colombe has a different idea. Next Friday, June 1, the coffee chain is kicking off its music-meets-activism Hope & Fury concert series at its Fishtown location with a performance by Philly trio ill Fated Natives and a panel discussion on social issues.

According to La Colombe’s website, the mission of the series is to “[showcase] voices of the community to drive conversations around hard topics with the goal of making the world a better and fairer place for all people.”

The panel, which will focus on the struggle of being a minority in America, will be moderated by La Colombe CEO Todd Carmichael and feature the three members of ill Fated Natives. The band will discuss the inspiration they’ve found in the struggles of indigenous peoples fighting imperialism, and how we can work toward creating positive change in today’s world. Their performance following the panel will be hosted by Philly rapper Chill Moody.

The event is free, but attendees are asked to RSVP in advance via lacolombe.com. There will also be free beer from Yards and Dock Street, and an exclusive t-shirt for sale to benefit Beyond The Bars. Find more information on the event’s Facebook page.
