BC Camplight contrasts post-Brexit England and post-election America in “I’m Desperate”

Last week Philly expat BC Camplight released a video for his new single, “I’m Desperate,” directed by Manchester–based collective ShortForm. Playing out like a nightmarish horror film, the video is meant to be reflective of Brexit Britain, but also draws parallels to the state of America after the 2016 presidential election. It is freaky and uncomfortable to watch. Set in an inception dream-within-a-dream scenario, flashing lights and flickering projections play over a writhing, feverish woman’s face.

The song is cold and electronic, growing increasingly frantic as it builds. A strange siren-like melody plays behind howling vocals and heavy synths. Written during a frustrated, isolated period in band leader Brian Christinzio’s life, the song conveys a sense of helplessness and panic, speaking on his self-destructive tendencies and feeling trapped.
