Wilco is known for its sonic boundary-pushing, its emotionally affecting lyrics, and its riveting live shows. But its less common that this most serious and revered band is praised for its sense of humor. Maybe their Wilco karaoke gig at MassMOCA this summer? Maybe their covers set a few years back? Before that…”Heavy Metal Drummer?”

Lest we forget, Jeff Tweedy and his bandmates do like to have fun as much as the rest of us, and we see that in the music video for their new song “Everybody Hides,” the latest single from their eleventh studio album, Ode to Joy, which is due out on October 4th via the band’s dBpm Records. In the Jamie Fleischel-directed video, Wilco breaks practice mid-song for a game of hide and seek, and as Tweedy counts down from 1,000, his bandmates scatter around Chicago.

Guitarist Nels Cline sneaks into a dryer chair at Rev. Billy’s Chop Shop on the North Side; pianist Mikael Jorgenson ducks behind a counter at Laurie’s Planet of Sound in Lincoln Square; multi-instrumentalist Patrick Sansone takes in a 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey at The Music Box in Lake View; bassist John Stirratt sneaks behind the scoreboard at Wrigley Field; and drummer Glenn Kotche talks his way into the Marina City towers, a site which should be familiar to anybody with even a passing interest in Wilco.

As Tweedy notes in a press release, “Everyone Hides” is the first video to feature Wilco in the flesh in close to 20 years.

“Maybe for obvious reasons we’ve avoided putting ourselves forward in this way and have tried to play to our strengths musically or, I don’t know, maybe we’ve just been lazy…. Or suspicious of expenditures outside of our focus on album making. For whatever reason this time around we just said fuck it and had a blast.”

Watch “Everyone Hides” below, and check out Wilco’s fall and winter tour dates in support of Ode to Joy. No Philly shows are in the mix right now, but we’re hoping that will change. Grab a pre-order of Ode to Joy here.
