Philly writer, musician, and DJ John Morrison is the latest guest on 25 O’Clock, the Philly music podcast hosted by Dan Drago.

In the hour-long conversation, Morrison — a host of WXPN’s hip-hop show Culture Cypher Radio and a writer here at The Key — discuses the evolution of his own podcast, the excellent weekly series Serious Rap Shit, and how it is expanding to include guests and other features with its new IHeartMedia distribution deal.

Morrison also talks about his journey through music and the influence that his older brother Devin, a first gen hip-hop kid of the 80s, had on him.

He reflects on his work as a journalist, and the conflict he sometimes feels between documenting scenes and opening the door to their exploitation by folks just trying to make money. He goes deep on digging in record store bins around the country, and the process of finding sonic diamonds in the rough from an otherwise unremarkable release.

And he talks about the spontaneity of radio, and its ability to catch listeners off guard. He’ll do that tonight when the latest episode of Culture Cypher Radio airs on WXPN; tune in from 7 to 10 p.m. on 88.5 FM in Philly or wx.pn/listen worldwide.
