Ahead of her spring tour, Sharon Van Etten has shared a new single, “Beaten Down,” the singer-songwriter’s first release since her 2019 album Remind Me Tomorrow. Van Etten will be playing shows in cities she missed on last year’s tour, so there’s no Philly date, but she also announced an appearance at Central Park SummerStage in July with Real Estate and Grace Ives.

According to Van Etten, “‘Beaten Down’ is about love, patience and empathy. It’s about making life-changing choices and remaining strong enough to see them through.”

“Beaten Down” is accompanied by a video directed by Nicky and Juliana Giraffe. Dancers Allison and Veronica Huber join Van Etten in the stark desert landscape to give movement to the song’s moody synths and keys and Van Etten’s echoing vocals.

“Our goal was to create a striking and psychedelic video set in the California desert, a welcoming of Sharon’s next chapter here,” Nicky and Juliana Giraffe share. “Upon hearing the song, our minds automatically drifted into stark black and white, fever dreams, dark silhouettes contrasted against a barren desert landscape. Our intention was to give Sharon’s song and performance space to breathe and echo. It was important to us that the dancers were strongly connected and we’re so lucky to have worked with the talented Huber Twins on this project.”
