Lovelorn let go of the familiar in “Around You”

In the years since their doomy punk band Creepoid parted ways, Pat and Anna Troxell have been making noise in the minimal, mysterious darkwave project Lovelorn.

Over the course of several changes in sound and personnel, the band has arrived at a compact configuration — Pat on synths and percussion, Anna on bass, both sharing vocals in a Kills-esque frenzy — and is ready this year to make a proper debut via 6131 Records.

Their first single via the Richmond label is out today; “Around You” was produced by Don Devore of Ink & Dagger with the band, mixed by Gradwell House’s Matt Weber, and mastered by Sarah Register. It’s built around a rattling drumbeat that slams into overdrive with layers of synth tones reminiscent of early 80s Cure and mantra-like lyrics of frustration and desperation voiced by both Troxells.

As the band tells us:

“‘Around You’ was the first song we wrote that really felt like a clear departure from Creepoid. We had already been writing for a few months, but in hindsight we were still entrapped in what felt familiar. With ‘Around You,’ we finally began to let go of that and to push into new territory. It was the beginning of us understanding what Lovelorn could be, a real hello/goodbye moment.”

They kick off their 2020 run this Saturday night at Ortlieb’s and travel to SXSW and back over the course of March, then link up with Soft Kill and Tamaryn in Brooklyn for a May / June tour.
