Harrowgrove explores the juncture of power and peace on “Pretexting”
South Jersey songwriter, producer, and performer C.J. Davis has revived his brooding electronic rock project Harrowgrove, who we last heard from when 2017’s CAPS LOCK EP dropped. That project was tense and tumultuous, reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails’ mid-00s output, and Harrowgrove released one EP in the time since then (June’s DISCONNECT CONNECT LIMIT).
With the new song “Pretexting,” Harrowgrove dials down the aggression — it’s quite a serene and sublime sublime, in a way that makes us think of Massive Attack’s Blue Lines and Sade’s Love Deluxe. Davis calls the music “a marriage of old school analog & modern digital sounds,” and calls the lyrics “a demonstration of power & enticement,” evident as the song poses the question “How bad do you want me?”
