Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards has just released a new song, “Birds On A Feeder.” This marks the second single off of her upcoming album Total Freedom, which will be released via Dualtone Records on August 14.

Total Freedom will be Edwards’ first studio album since 2012’s Voyageur. She took a “working sabbatical” from music in 2014 and has spent the past six years running a coffee shop, named Quitters, in her hometown of Stittsville, Ottawa. This extended break from making music allowed Edwards “all the time and space I needed to even just enjoy listening to music again.”

Edwards has stated about the future of her musical career, “I don’t want to write songs that are going to keep me in a dark place for two years.” That desire certainly comes through in “Options Open,” the folk-rock lead single released in May, and for “Birds On A Feeder.” This new track is softer, rooted more in gentle fingerpicking than a driving, foot-stomping beat, but it speaks to pulling oneself out of a darkness and learning to live again: “I got total freedom,” Edwards sings, “No one to need.”
