UK electropop artist Aluna has released the second single, “Warrior,” off her upcoming debut solo project. Although the single was initally set to be released on June 5th, Aluna delayed the single to avoid overshadowing the world-wide protests last week.. “I can’t miss this opportunity to do something that I usually never allow myself to do—Share my black experience,” she announced via Instagram.

“Warrior” is a fierce but lowkey electropop track that pulses and throbs with chrome-like precision. Menacing kicks underscore glitzy synth shimmers as Aluna sings “Tell me what to do / I want a warrior fight with you.” The production and topline melody are refreshingly minimalist; overall, the track has just enough substance to keep your head bobbing to the beat without sounding over-produced or bloated.

Aluna is half of the London electropop duo AlunaGeorge, whose hits include 2015’s “You Know You Like It” and 2016’s “I’m In Control” ft. Popcaan. In a recent interview with The Forty-Five, Aluna made it clear that the duo’s collobaration’s aren’t over despite Aluna’s past two singles (“Warrior” and “Body Pump”) released as solo projects. “There started to be certain musical and lyrical areas that felt awkward to do in a duo,” Aluna explained, “because they were so singularly from my culture and my perspective.”

Aluna’s debut solo album will be out later this year through Mad Decent. Stream Aluna’s “Warrior” below.
